Health Do I need the Emergency Department?

Sometimes you may not be sure if your problem is an emergency.

When in doubt, call healthdirect on 1800 022 222 or visit https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/ Qualified staff will advise you on what to do and if you need to go to a GP, pharmacy or emergency department.

If you require medical assistance, during the night, on a weekend or public holiday you can access the National Home Doctor after-hours service 13Sick After Hours Doctors | Bulk Billed Home Visits & Telehealth. For minor illnesses or injury, there are other care options to consider:

Level of Care Examples of ailments or concerns
Selfcare Cold, minor headache
Pharmacy Minor cuts, grazes
GP or dentist Gastro, flu, toothache
Emergency Heart attack, stroke, major burns, broken bones, major traffic accidents

For a medical Emergency

Dial 000 and for an ambulance

Check your OSHC policy when you receive it to understand your
ambulance cover, should you need it in a medical emergency. If you hold OSHC with Allianz, Medibank Private or Bupa you will not be charged a fee for the doctor home visit.

Safety Emergencies

Although we hope the situation never arises, if you need to call an emergency service, the number to call is 000. The operator will then ask whether you want an ambulance, the fire brigade or the police and why you want this assistance. You will also be asked for your name and address and telephone number.
